The recent healthcare reform law includes $1B in cash grants and tax credits that can be awarded to qualifying emerging life sciences companies. There is a new program available to companies with no more than 250 employees performing qualified research and development during 2009 and 2010 that can receive tax credits or actual cash grants.

Is that your company? If so, the gold rush is on. With only $1B in combined cash and tax credits, the competition will be intense. The Treasury Department will publish guidelines for the application process by May 21. Eligible projects referred as "qualifying therapeutic discovery projects" should include a host of clinical activities, diagnostic projects or therapeutic products, process, or technology.

Come and find out if there is money here for your company and how to get it. An expert panel will look at the questions around this windfall of available money. If the guidelines have been issued we will dissect them, and if they are still pending, we'll discuss what to expect and how to respond.

  • What companies qualify for the program?
  • What are the requirements?
  • What is the application process?
  • How will the applications be evaluated?
  • When and how are the funds released?
  • What are the legal parameters?
  • What are the resources for assistance with the grant application?

The Panel

  • Jeremy Leffler, Chief Operating Officer, BayBio
  • Glen Y. Sato, Partner, Cooley LLP
  • Anna Wong, Senior Manager, KPMG
