Laura Grossfield Birger, Partner

Laura Grossfield Birger is a partner in the Cooley Business Litigation Practice Group. She joined the firm in 2007 and is resident in the New York office. 

Ms. Birger is an accomplished trial attorney. Her practice focuses on white collar criminal matters, internal investigations, complex commercial litigation and appellate matters.

Prior to joining Cooley, Ms. Birger was at the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York. During her tenure in the U.S. Attorney's Office, she served in a number of important leadership positions, including Assistant U.S. Attorney (1997-2002), Deputy Chief of the Appeals Unit (2003-2004) and Chief of the General Crimes Unit (2004-2007).

Ms. Birger initially clerked at the District Court level for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. She began her career in private practice in 1994 with Fried Frank Harris Shriver & Jacobson in New York, and joined the U.S. Attorney's Office in 1997.

Ms. Birger graduated from Brown University in 1990 magna cum laude and earned her law degree from Yale Law School in 1993. While at Yale she was an editor and was on the Admissions Committee of the Yale Law Journal. She earned the Thurman Arnold Appellate Competition Prize for best oral argument in Moot Court and the Potter Stewart Prize for the student team making the best overall written and oral arguments in Moot Court.

Recent matters include:

  • Internal investigation for a large financial firm
  • Representation of a foreign bank in a fraud case in Southern District of New York arising out of the activities of a rogue trader formerly employed by the bank
  • Representation of numerous individuals in connection with investigations by the Department of Justice and Securities and Exchange Commission
  • Representation of an individual in a felony prosecution brought by the New York Attorney General alleging corruption in connection with investments of the New York Common Retirement Fund

Ms. Birger has been recognized by New York Superlawyers for white collar criminal defense.

Ms. Birger is admitted to practice in New York and in the following courts: Southern District of New York, Eastern District of New York, Northern District of New York, and the Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
